Little Miss Independent's 4th of July Cake

Last week Evie came to me with this idea for a cake that had a blue corner and some red stripes like "a 'merican flag". She said, "we can use blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries but I don't know how to do the white stuff". I suggested we make a cream cheese frosting. She really liked that idea.  She asked me to help her with the cake part since she can't read recipes. Today I surprised her with all her requested ingredients. This 37 week pregnant mama opted for lemon flavored break and bake sugar cookies. I taught her how to make cream cheese frosting, which she told me tastes "disgusting and needs more powdered sugar, and maybe Daddy's homemade vanilla".   She asked me to help her wash and cut her fruits.  Then she asked me to draw some straight lines so she could line up her fruit stripes. Occationally she'd look up at me and ask, "can I have a taste test of blueberries"  -- Little did she know, Mam...

Spring Break Bucket List - Mission: Complete

It's been two weeks since Spring Break. I think it took us that long to recover from the amount of fun we had in just 10 short days.  We checked everything off the bucket list and then some! Friday & Saturday - Kites and Trikes The girls enjoyed a few laps around the neighborhood on their new tandem tricycle that Maggie got for her birthday. (Thanks Grandma and G.Daddy for the awesome Craigslist find) Eric took the girls down to Leeann and Dan's neighborhood to take Luke over to the park to play. They also tried to fly kites.  Little success, but it satisfied Evie. We had fun over the weekend coloring eggs and celebrating Easter with family. Monday - Ice Skating Monday I took Evie to go ice skating. She was so excited and loved everything about the day.  She loved watching the kids skate. Evie even did fantastic getting her skates on and walking around the outside of the rink in her skates. However, the second her feet hit the ice, she p...

Reader Requested: On Decorating Cookies

If y'all follow me on Instagram you'll notice that I decorate cookies and cookie pops a few times a year. Several folks have asked for recipes and instructions.  I will share with you my line up of go-to resources. Cut out cookie recipe: The Decorated Cookie - Cutout cookie dough  This is the best damn cookie recipe you'll ever try.  Notes: You HAVE to chill the dough as directed. I even re-chill my scraps before using them a second time. The fresher your ingredients the better they taste. Lastly, I skip the almond extract. I think it tastes like chemicals. I use homemade vanilla or occasionally a flavored liquor like Frangelico. Royal Icing Recipe: The Decorated Cookie - Royal Icing Sort Of Recipe  (scroll down).  I start with 7.5 cups of powdered sugar and adjust from there depending on what each color is being used for (flooding, decorating, name writing, etc) Flooding aka "the wet frosting look": I taught myself using the guide in Th...

The One With All the Christmases

With Thanksgiving so late this year, it seemed as though Evie went back to school for just a few days before she had her class party and broke for the holiday. Advent brought tidings of great joy....and the flu.  All four of us had it over the course of two weeks and it lingered. FOR-EV-ER.  Our pediatrician said she's never seen anything like the influenza outbreak we've had in Georgia this December. And perfect timing BrAun for the Klout Perk.  We love our new temporal thermometer. It came on day 2 of the flu. So awesome for taking lots of people's temperatures several times a day. After many, many, many days cooped up in the house we finally joined the land of the living and made it to almost all of our regular Christmas events.    I did NOT make it to the Gingerbread Party this year, so there won't be a post. But it did happen and I heard it was fabulous. (photo c/o Katie) My family and any in town in-laws gathered for our a...
